Twenty-seven sketches of life-long enjoyment of amateur sports. Many of the events are on water or snow–cross-country skis and lots of small boats, including single and double racing shells and canoes. There are also reflections on the benefits of exercise from middle-age into old age, both for mind and body, though many of these pieces are comic–as many pratfalls as medals.
The title comes from a remark that a young long-distance runner made when the young man asked me my time in the fifty-mile JFK Memorial run. I answered and the young man blurted, “Room for improvement.”
